Question:
I'm unable to tolerate vitamin intake
I need some help!!! I have tried taking my vitamins and they make me really sick I have tried numerous ways of taking them but to no avail....I have a friend who purchased the Vista Vitamins she is Pre-op now and they seem to work well for her. I would like to know if anyone else is taking them Post Op and if so how do they work for you and are there any side effects? — mari62870 (posted on September 26, 2003)

You didn't say what types you have tried? I can tolerate the Flinstone
Complete chewables, I also take a supplement called Levity (specialized for
women), sublingual B-12 and calcium supps. I tried several others (liquid,
and other chewables) but have always come back to Fred and Wilma for my
daily dose of vites. I also found that if I eat a few bites of food then
my vitamins then finish eating, it seems to be better. I haven't tried the
Vista Vitamins. You have to find what works for you, maybe ask your friend
if you can buy a handful to try and see how they go down. If you can
tolerate them then go for it. You'll know by your labs if you need more.

I have always had problems with vitamins. It has something to do with the
fillers that are used in so many of them. I would fill awful after taking
them for next a few days. Years ago I found vitamins by Andrew Lessman.
I've had no problems at all with his vitamins. Take them daily. My
nutritionist said they would be fine post op too. They are capsules but
can be opened and mixed with food or in a protein shake. You can also take
the full capsules and drop them into a protein shake and blender and blend
until completely blended. Works great. Here's the link:

Shopping Network. I buy directly from Your Vitamins. Great service.

Certain types of vitamins make me sick, usually the ones with a coating on
them. They even did before surgery so I can't blame it on WLS. Chewables or
liquids (if you hold your nose!) can work until you get further postop. I
started taking one-a-day type vitamins at about 6 weeks postop. The trick
is to keep trying until you find something that works for you. Buy your
stuff at WalMart and keep the receipts. You can return anything there for
any reason and they don't kick up a fuss. Just make sure you take SOMETHING
or you will be sick!

The only time I've felt ill post-op was when I took my vites without food.
I always try to take them with food to put something down there...otherwise
I'm nauseous for about an hour. If I am drinking a shake and it's time for
my vites, I wait till the last few sips and use that to down my vites.
Otherwise, I take with water and them eat a couple bites of
something...anything to put something down there so I don't get sick. Hope
this helps! Lap Rny 05.19.03 Down 70# and counting!

Try taking them before you go to bed. That's the only way I can do mine.
Otherwise, I have a ton of nausea.
