Question:
Should I be concerned about gaining 4 pounds 8 weeks out?
I went to the doctor today and found out that I have gained 4 pounds in 2 weeks (I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago). He told me not to be worried, and it just might be water weight gain. He still thinks I am doing great, but I was disappointed in myself. 2 weeks ago I was down 53 pounds and was really hoping to be down 60 by the time I saw him next. He told me to not drink too much water, I was drinking more than the requirement and to watch my carbs. He told me over and over again to not worry about it. I have been on solid food for 2 weeks, and he is probably right, I was drinking too much water and probably eating to many carbs. He wants me to eat more fruit, protein, and veggies. He's right, but I feel very depressed. Yesterday I was on cloud nine cause I felt really good, and now I find out I gained instead of lost, is this normal or am I making too big a deal out of it? — tpalmer (posted on May 30, 2003)

how much water are you drinking?? I have never heard that you can have too
much water, especailly that early out- unless you have kidney problems.
WEre you eating salty foods (which could cause the water retention?

I have gained weight 3 times since surgery (02/05/03)! It always comes
back off!!! Twice I have gained 3 lbs and once I gained 2! The first time
I almost fainted but I know that I am doing what I should so I am not to
worried!!! I am exercising and feel great! I have lost 50 lbs now! It all
adds up! Hang in there!

Robert, my husband knows someone who had this surgery several years ago.
He has gained his weight back too. But, his problems is alcohol. He
drinks the equivalent of about 10 cheeseburgers everyday, if not more. I'm
not saying this other guy has a problem with alcohol, but that is one
answer. You do have to give up certain things, and this person wasn't
willing. --Shelly

Tracy,
You are retaining water. Don't let anyone make you think you are gaining
back weight you just lost. You are doing an awesome job. I also think it
is impossible to drink too much water. Our bodies need it.

This is one of those times where having more specific information about
your food intake, and exercise, would be helpful. If you're worried you're
eating too many carbs, try tracking what you're eating on fitday.com (it's
free) and see exactly how your numbers add up. My guess is you're not
doing anything "wrong," and it may have been "that
time" of the month combined with a garden-variety plateau (which you
can get no matter how vigilant you are about your eating habits). If
you've been doing really well with your water and eating, there's no reason
to beat yourself up or change up your routine. But you need to have a firm
handle on what that routine is in order to "thumb your nose" at
an odd scale experience, which is why I think tracking what you're eating
might help you really KNOW you're okay, freaky scale experience aside.
Hang in there!
