Question:
How much Protein can I absorb at one time?
Do you know if us WLS people can absorb more than 30 gm of protein at one sitting? I read that we can only process 30 gm at a time somewhere, but I don't remember where. I asked my nutritionist about it, but she never heard that before. I would like to drink all my protein drink (60 gm) at one time and get it overwith, but I don't know if I'm wasting my money and my protein. — rita W. (posted on May 25, 2003)

That 30g rule is for NORMIES, as established by the protein mfrs. It would
be in their best interest to promote higher doses and of course, you
wouldn't get the benefit, so you'd buy more protein, right? But no, for
normies (not athletes, not us) they stick with the 30g rule. Most of the
mfrs are quite principles, BTW. There's no guarantee we get even THAT much
per serving.

I don't KNOW how much we absorb at one time, but I would think that it
would be much better to spread the protein intake out across the day. And,
I know that everyone is different, but my surgeon likes for us to get at
least 30g of protein per day from food and the rest can come from
supplements. He feels that if we do that, we are establishing better
eating habits and not depending on a protein supplement for nutrition. I
usually get about 50-60g of protein a day but only 15 of it comes from a
protein drink (I am almost 18 months post-op, so I can eat more than the
newbies). Good luck.
