Question:
How did you discover you do/don't dump on sugar?
I am almost 16 weeks postop. I have avoided sugar for the most part but have had it in OJ and other juices, especially early on. Last night I had dinner out and part of the meal was baked beans. I ate about 2 or 3 spoonfuls in the course of the meal (not all at once). Later on my husband said "I'm surprised you ate them, they must be loaded with sugar or molasses or something." I tasted them again and it was pretty clear they were loaded with something sugar-y. It hadn't dawned on me before that but now I'm wondering how much sugar it takes to figure out if you dump or not. I don't dump, per se, on fat but if I eat enough of it I start to feel pretty queasy. — susanje (posted on April 26, 2003)

I can eat all types of beans, cereals and even a bite or two of pop tarts.
I still avoid sugar. I do dump on sugars easy, even in sphagetti sauce. The
way I test is tiny bites at home, luckily when I've had the dumping
syndrome I have'nt thrown up! (Just all the other symptoms)I'm only supose
to have 3grams or less of sugar, other than natural of course. Good luck!

i DON'T REALLY HAVE AN ANSWER FOR YOU. I AM ABOUT 19 WEEKS POST-OP AND I
HAVE THUS FAR NOT DUMPED ON ANYTHING. FROM WHAT I HEAR I WOULD KNOW IF I
DID!!! I ROUTINELY AVOID SUGAR INCLUDING JUICE ETC...THAT'S NOT TO SAY I
DON'T TREAT MYSELF OCCASSIONALLY. ON EASTER I HAD SOME CHEESECAKE THAT HAD
26 GRAMS OF SUGAR. I HAD 1/3 OF 1 SLICE (LESS THAN 9 GRAMS OF SUGAR) I ALSO
HAD SOME CHOCOLATE CANDY THE DAY BEFORE(20 GRAMS OF SUGAR FOR 4 PIECES. I
HAD ONE PIECE) I MAY BE WRONG BUT I THINK IF YOU WANT SOMETHING
"REAL" ONCE IN AWHILE IT'S PROBABLY OKAY IN SMALL QUANTITIES. I
AM AFRAID TO KNOW WHETHER OR NOT I DUMP OR NOT. FOR NOW I JUST TRY TO STAY
AT OR BELOW 11 GRAMS OF SUGAR AT A TIME. THE BAKED BEANS PROBABLY HAD ALOT
OF SUGAR IN THEM BUT YOU ATE SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT THAT IT WASN'T ENOUGH
SUGAR TO CAUSE YOU A PROBLEM. I COULD ALSO BE WRONG . I ALSO FEEL QUEASY

When I was about seven months out, I decided I don't "dump" after
having two servings (half a pint) of Edy's Grandma's Cookie Dough ice cream
(something like 56 grams of sugar!). Still...I don't have ice cream often,
and haven't had that much in one sitting since then.

To be quite honest I have not attempted items with sugar in them other than
what you mentioned like Orange Juice and foods/drinks with no sugar added.
I have gotten sick from them as well. I think this is one of those types
of things where everyone is going to be different! Good luck!

Since I don't do the "full" dump thing--I only tend to get
nauseous--I limit whatever sweet treat may be tempting me to no more than
50-100 cals maximum. It gives me the taste and satisfaction I need to go
forth and do this program more wholeheartedly and not begrudgingly. I
know for some that would create WLS sabotage--but I'm okay with it. Good

I ate a muffin at a meeting and later looked at the nutrition label when I
was at the grocery store -- 32g of sugar - no effects at all! It was a bad
discovery.

I wish I'd never experimented and found out that I wouldn't dump. I kick
myself almost daily...heck, almost hourly some days...because I am a slow
loser. I feel like I'm never going to get my weight off and I feel like
I've let a bunch of people down. My advice, DON'T TRY ANYTHING and stay
good. I wish I'd heeded my own advice.

I was maybe 4 months out and had tested myself on half of a
fresh-off-the-line Krispy Kreme donut. Did ok with that. Few days later I
had just finished a No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast, hubby and I
were on our way out the door and he was munching some cute little chocolate
peanut butter bears (bought from a bowling buddy's kid as a school
fundraiser). I nonchalantly said "let me have a couple of those
dear." He of course hesitated, "Are you sure?" Ha! He got
the last laugh! 10 minutes later he was pulling over at some dive biker
bar, letting me stench up their freshly scrubbed bathroom! What a tummy
ache! Only time I have ever had diarrhea post-op! So the next time hubby
got out those cute little chocolate bears I said, "Keep those
'laxative bears' away from me!" Now at nearly 10 months post-op I can
tolerate about 15 grams of sugar at a time, but the only time I have that
is in a Balance Gold Bar. Otherwise, no more pushing it for this girl! I'm
even eliminating my Balance Gold bars this week, and starting on real
protein (shakes). Just ordered myself some Champion Nutrition Pure Whey
Stack (chocolate)...the best tasting of all the samples I've tried. It is
SOOOO true when the "Grads" of WLS tell you that sugar
consumption begets more sugar consumption. The more you eat the more you
want. Some day you surely WILL dump and it aint pretty, sister! The dumping
is what keeps us honest. My .02 cents worth for the day! - Anna LAP RNY

I would just eat a little more each time until I realized I do not dump. I
can eat anything sweet (though I do not abuse it) without incident. Its sad
because until recently, sweets were pretty much the only things that did
NOT make me sick! Odd, huh?....Karen (lap rny-9/20/02- down 127 pounds!)

This is a good question. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to dump, since I
can drink any all natural fruit juices, even OJ or grapefruit juice, which
have about 40g of sugar!! I am only 11 weeks post op and about 2 weeks ago
I was drinking an Ensure, one of those little 6 or 8 oz cans, and became
very nauseous, queasy, lightheaded and then broke into a cold sweat, nearly
passing out right at work! I looked at the can and it had 19g of sugar!
And I was only halfway through it! I work in a doctor's office and there
were 4 nurses standing around me trying to get me to drink some water or
something. Only time could help. It took me at least a half hour before
it passed. Never again!!

Less than a week post-op I tried drinking some juice for a change from
broth, water and jello. It was a 6 oz. 100% juice box with 23 grams of
carbs. After drinking it, I didn't feel very good at all...but it never
occured to me that I was dumping...after all, I was only several days
post-op...and aren't you supposed to feel icky some of the time? Then the
next week, I had one again and this time it really hit me...of course I was
feeling much better in general by then...it was then that I realized that
the juice was making me dump. Then again at about 5 or 6 weeks, I tried
1/2 of a low carb protein bar and had it happen again...which I would have
never thought! So, thinking it was a fluke, I tried the other flavor I
bought, out in public (because I was starting to feel drained and light
headed) and ended up having to leave and go home immediately. Since then,
I have been very careful, especially in public, because I don't feel I can
afford the time and agony of "experimenting". As far as how much
sugar does it take to make a person dump??? I think it is different for
everyone. Also, remember that some people don't dump at all.

hi i was told we are allow 15 grams of sugar in one solid food if that
helps you at all take care good luck
