Question:
Does anyone have experience with the national health club chains?
I'm starting to think about a place to work out after I have my surgery. I'm planning to walk for cardio but would also like to work out with weights. I'm interested in something more open-ended than Curves, with free weights and machines. I know that many of the chains are (a) expensive; (b) not always comfortable for chubby gals. Does anybody have recommendations? I may just look for what's close or try the YMCA but am curious as to whether anyone's tried 24 Hour Fitness, Gold's Gym, etc. Thanks! — sjwilde (posted on March 11, 2003)

Women's Workout World is another "all-over" chain of gyms that I
personally belong to and feel very comfortable there. It's your standard
gym with free weights, cross-trainer machines and various aerobics classes
however, only women are allowed to go. They even have a small
"daycare" type area for your children while you workout. I felt
very comfortable going there at 330lbs. It's $19 for a standard membership
or $21 a month for a deluxe membership (includes a visit with a trainer
every 4-6 weeks). Perhaps this is another option for you!

Definately stick to something with more variety (weights, hours, maybe a
track or pool) than Curves. Have you thought about going when it is
slower?? Most gyms open early (5am) or later at night, when there are not
many people there? I have also tried Lifetime Fitness (a little more
expensive than average) which is open 24-7. I have no shame in skipping a
8pm tv show to hit the gym, even if it is just for the sauna and pool!
