Question:
Any one else feel like they can eat larger amounts of food?

I am 6 1/2 months post op RNY. I have lost 125 pounds. I have been very careful and only eaten what I am supposed to and I have always measured everything and kept track of everything that goes into my mouth. Within the last few weeks I feel like I could eat everything in sight. I am not hungry and that is scaring me. Today for lunch I had a cup of chicken noodle soup, a piece of toast and a doughnut. I just felt like I couldn't get enough to eat. Then at other times I eat 2-3 bites and want to throw up. I know that I shouldn't have eaten the doughnut, but they were there and well, you know the whole drill. I just wanted to know if it scares anyone else that they can eat more than they thought they could and any suggestions to get back on track. I lost weight pretty quickly in the beginning, 125 in 6 months, but haven't lost in 3 weeks. Thanks for your help.    — tulagirl (posted on February 5, 2003)

I am the same way, I will be 1 year post-op on the 27th.of this month, and some days it seems like i can eat 2 or three bites and I am full right now, and other times it seems like I can eat and eat and eat, I am hoping this is normal...

First of all, congratulations on your loss so far. I am right there with you. Sunday will be 7 months since my surgery date and I have lost 126lbs. I hit a short plateau (about two weeks) before I lost the last two pounds. I too find that I can eat more than I used to. I have been dealing with a lot of family issues, and I am trying hard not to revert back to emotional eating. In the breakroom today the had food that was leftover from a retirement party last night. Thank goodness there was a veggie tray, because I honestly felt like I couldn't stop eating there for a while. I actually stood at the table and ate like ten or twelve carrots with dip, one right after the other. Had there only been sweets and breads sitting there I probably would have had a doughnut! We have to remember to work the tool, and part of that involves fighting against eating when we are not hungry. My mom reminded me of something the other day and she is right: Almost everyone gets head hunger, even those who are slim and healthy. The difference is how they choose to react to it. Just know that you are not alone. Again, congratulations on your great loss thus far.

I am 8 months, and right about where you are now, at 6 months my hunger and appetite came back. I know you said you're not very hungry, you can just eat more, but that is the same with me. I have many health issues I am dealing with, so I had to take time off from college and am not working, so I am home all the time besides the gym and friends or whatever. SO I think alot of my eating is boredom now. For instance yesterday I had a 1/4 of a 6inch sub (mind you I only used 1 slice cheese, 2 slice thin meat and 1/2 the bread. It was almost 3 ounces i think. But today I could only eat 5 bites of a cheeseburger, so that was like 1 ounce. I don't know why our stomachs change like this. The weight loss will slow down after a while, and the 1st 6 months is usually the best for everyone, so don't be worried. You're doing great- 125lbs. is wonderful!! I have to say though, for me personally, I don't think I have ever eaten more than 3oz of solid food at one sitting, and at 8 months post-op, I think that is good. SO although I can eat alot more than I did a few months ago and it scares me, I know I'm doing well. Do you measure your food? Try that, that will probably make you feel more at ease to see that you're not eating as much as you think you are. And just think about how much we used to eat, it's nothing near that!! Goodluck to you, and don't worry too much, you sound like you're doing great!

Like everyone else, I'm right there with you. The difference is, I'm only 3.5 months post. I'm eating when I'm not hungry -- old behaviors resurfacing. I'm pretty good about eating healthy foods, but still....anyway, this is my advice: don't beat yourself up. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Take a deep breath, and promise yourself that today, you will eat only when hungry. Good luck!
