Question:
Had NG tube out 2 days ago. I have alot of pain and fever.

Had surgery on Thursday and went home on Saturday and was doing great for a few day. I thought, wow, this is too busy. Was sent home on a full liquid diet. I was eating baby food #2 and mashed potatoes and drinking. My husband fixed me mashed potatoes and the problem seemed to start there. They were like normal mashed potatoes and too many but, I can't believe it, I ate them anyway instead of bothering him and asking him to put some milk in it. The next morning when I got up I felt like I had mashed potatoes on my tongue. Later I decided that somehow I had stripped my tongue because it was bright pink. So I went on yogurt to help with that. I started having pain and swelling in my belly and each days seemed worse. I had yogurt for 2 days. By Friday I was miserable. The NG tube seemed to be what was hurting. Doctor took it out on Friday and said it wasn't infected even thought it was red around the tube. I told him I was having my temperatures in the 99's. He said that wasn't unusual. By 7PM, 6 hours later, my temperature rose to 101.5 so I called. He seemed puzzled and said that not much happends after 8 days out. Said to take tynelol for the fever and prescribed antiobiotic for general purpose. It hurts for me to take a deep breath and use the breathing monitor. I'm really sore. He said that he would do a CT scan if it continued. He's 75 minutues away and since I seem to be getting better, I haven't called him again. I thought maybe the yogurt contributed to the problem. I've only had see through liquids yesterday and today. Has anyone else experienced such problems?    — Sharon M. (posted on February 2, 2003)

hi sharon, I had Ng tube in the hospital to drai the excess fuild from a blockage. The doctor lubed the tube real good befor he put it in me and pulse he gave me a lidicaine block to help ease the pain. I remeber the back of my throat was raw. But I never experienced pain in general or high temps. Ive been in the hospital 2 more times since surgery because of blockages and swelling. Each time they put a tube down my nose I hate it. You might of had an allerigic reaction to the the tube it self it is possible. But still there should be an on call doctor you can reach. Don't wait. Trust me I feel your pain. At least you have not had to have a feeding tube place in you avoid that it's more painfull the NS tube. JUst go see your doctor god bless sheri burke hang in there you'll be better in no time.

I am going to assume that the doctor took out the G Tube (from the abdominal wall)and not the NG tube (down the nose and to the stomach). (I have never heard of someone going home with the NG tube in and also eating) A friend of mine, had a very similar experience. She had her g-tube taken out and by the next day had developed a fever and tenderness. She was readmitted with a nasty infection that was very serious. I would not wait to see if you get better on your own. I would see the doctor right away. Shelley
