Question:
Need advice about Dr. appointment
I have PPO insurance so i don't need a referal from PCP. Which is good because i don't have one. Anyway, since i haven't seen a Dr. for so long my surgeons office told me to go to a Dr. and get checked out so i can get my comorbs documented. My question is what should i ask the Dr. to test for? And after the appointment can i get a copie of their notes and such that day? — Dinell H. (posted on December 9, 2002)

I would sit down and write out my medical and surgical history. Then write
down any problems you are having now, including joint pain, shortness of
breath, skin rashes, fatigue, snoring, heartburn, etc. I would ask for a
comprehensive metabolic profile, a lipid panel, a thyroid panel, and a
blood count, to start with. Other tests may be done depending on what you
tell the doctor. Also write down your family medical history, especially
things like any diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, as
this may also give clues for what to look for. Some of these tests need to
be done fasting, so when you make the appointment, ask if you can have
blood drawn that day- if so, get a morning appointment and go in fasting
(nothing after supper the night before). The more information you can
present the doctor with, the better. If you can, also request records to be
sent from any previous doctors or providers, in advance if possible.

I was in the same boat you are with the PCP. My surgeon had a list of
PCP's that he has worked with or knew personally and I chose the closest
one to me. When I went in to see him all I told him was that I was having
this surgery and needed a letter of clearance. Since he was familiar with
my Dr and the procedure he knew what to do. My surgeon had already ordered
every test imaginable so the PCP just looked over those results, did a
physical exam, and then requested copies of my files from every specailist
I had seen in the last couple of years. That was enough to get the letter
of clearance. Now he is my family PCP too.
