Question:
If I HAD Hepatitis B over 10 years ago, can I still have RNY surgery?
I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere. I had Hep B 12 years ago. All liver function tests have been "normal" since then. I always test pos to Hep B Core Antibody (HBCAB), because it will always be in my blood, as my body developed the antibody while fighting it. This is normal, and doctors expect to see this as a result of my prior Hep B history. Has anyone else HAD Hep B and qualified for surgery at a later time? — misscutiepatootie (posted on December 8, 2002)

I haven't had Hep B but I did test positive for Hep C when I had my pre-op
tests. I had to have more tests done and until those results came back I
didn't know if I would be able to have my RNY or not. My viral load was
very low and my liver function was normal so I did get to have my surgery.
I would think that since your liver function is normal there shouldn't be a
problem. Just discuss it with your surgeon.

I contracted Hepatitis B about 9 years ago. I had VBG in 2000 and had a
revision to an RNY 10/31/01. My answer would be to you that this was NEVER
an issue at all. :) Good luck!
