Question:
How Many Consults Will My Insurance Pay For?
I am going through both my HMO and my PPO insurance (Blue Cross POS). Chances are the HMO will take a long time and give me a hard time. The PPO is easier though more expensive. Before I take a few thousand out of my pocket, I'd like to talk to a few surgeons. The surgeons typically charge around 300.00 for a consult. How many will my PCP refer me to? How many consults will my insurance pay WHILE I have the HMO process going as well? — susanje (posted on November 11, 2002)

My insurance is Cigna HMO of NC. I seen 3 different surgeons before
selecting the one I wanted. We have a right I think to choose as long as
they are on the list of covered surgeons. My co-pay was $10 a visit. My
PCP got the authorization for them. I was going to see a 4th. But, chose
a surgeon in my home town instead. It was easier for future reasons. Call
your insurance company or if you have a PCP and they get it authorzied for
you; then that means the insurance will pay. Good Luck!
