Question:
Has anyone else had trouble with tomatoes?
Hi, all!! I was wondering if any of you have had problems with tomatoes. I was allowed to try anything in careful moderation (I had a lap RNY on 09-23-02), and had been craving tomatoes. I got a beautiful tomatoe and sliced a thin slice. Two tiny bites into it, I began to feel bad, almost like a really bad cramp or gas pain in the pouch area. About ten minutes later I began vomiting and hurting very badly. Worse than right after surgery. I vomited on and off ( mostly on) for about three hours and we went to the hospital where I began vomiting blood. A little at first and then more and more. They finally got it stopped with Demerol (spelling?) and Phenegran (spelling?). I stayed in the hospital for three days, was in pretty bad pain for the first two. I just knew I had ruined my good surgeon's handiwork, but I hadn't. He thinks maybe a little piece of peel got stuck which started the trouble and led to me tearing my esophagus. Anyone had this happen or heard of it happening to anyone? I am terrified of food now. Please help. — Michelle H. (posted on November 8, 2002)

What a bad piece of luck. I too crave tomatoes and especially since WLS.
I've never had any problems with them though.

Wow, I'm sorry that you had to go through that. After I read your
question, my little problem with tomatoes seems like nothing. They just
make me feel nauseous, and don't even taste good anymore.

Sorry you have had the problems with the tomatores. I've been able to eat
tomatoes, skin and all, with no problems.

I've always had problems with tomato skins. My grandmother always peeled
her slicing tomatoes so that might be an option. When I first started
craving tomatoes, I began with mild salsa since I didn't want to deal with
the skins. I grew tomatoes this summer for the first time and had
wonderful meals with lean broiled meat or omlets and sliced tomatoes. I'm
about 2 years out so it may take some time to tolerate tomatoes.

I've been eating tomatoes - no skins - since about 3 weeks out, no
problems. I take the skin off of most things (apples, tomatoes, ham,
sausages, grapes, etc.) I eat though, simply because I'm too lazy to
pulverize the skin with my teeth.

Wow... that's too bad. I'm sorry the tomato went so awfully for you. I've
craved tomato stuff post-op. I have Spicy V-8 almost every day. Maybe try
tomato juices instead? Good luck! (or better luck anyway!)<br>Kelly

Hey, everyone! Thanks for all your advice. I'm glad I am not the only one
who loves tomatoes. I think it will be a while before I try them again, but
it will definitely be "no-peel"!!
And, I LOVE spicy V-8!!!
Thanks again, everybody!!
