Question:
I am so confused about Net impact carbs. Please help.

I have been eating protein bars to supplement my protein intake. Some of them say that they only have 2-4 grams of net impact carbs. But the nutrition label says that there are 21 carbs in the bar. I am confused. My nutritionist didn't really have an answer for me on this and also couldn't tell me how many carbs I am supposed to be having. Not to add too much to this question, but they really push for me to drink three glasses of skim milk per day. Although good for protein, calcium and the such there are 12 grams of carbs per day. This in an of itself adds 36 g of carbs per day. Is this too much?    — tulagirl (posted on October 3, 2002)

The non-impact carbs are the glycerin and other sweeteners. They don't mess with your blood sugar (or make you fat). However, the protein in them is not highly available, either. A mixed blessing. The milk carbs are NOT non-impact. (What do you use to fatten up a baby?). So, you're very perceptive to have noticed that. The protein/calcium trade-off is not worth the carb load. The protein & calcium are not high quality, and they no longer pass through the enzyme "bath" that once broke them down. I try to limit sugar g to single digit per meal. Sugar g. I do eat regular carbs, because other carbs ALSO do not pass through that digestive "bath", and some will be malabsorbed. Never sugar. Lips to hips, no stomach required. Sigh.
