Question:
coffee with creamer

Hi, I've never drank coffee my whole life untill I the surgery 20 months ago. Now I love it! The trouble is I like with 2 teaspoons of powdered creamer and I also add skim milk. I've been drinking 6 to 8 cups a day so that's a lot of extra cals. Anyone know of something similar I could put in my coffee with less cals.? Not to mention the creamer is probably mostly corn syrup! Also has anyone else just started drinking coffee since surgery? Open RNY,distal, transected. Down 181 pounds in 20 months!    — Deb H. Deb---- First of all, Congrats on your weight loss! 6-8 cups a day??? My concern is that your hydrating yourself enough. With all the coffee that you're drinking you need to supplement that much more water in your daily intake. As far as the powdered creamer is concerned, I don't think it's that bad for us. I feel that it's better than cream or milk do to the fat and sugar content.

I use International Coffees, French Vanilla, SF/Decaf. You can also mix in two equal, and two scoops of Designer Whey Natural flavor and have a great cappachino flavor with 35g of protein.

I hope some of that is decaf, girl! If not, I'll bet you have PLENTY of energy! LOL I do drink coffee, but only about 2 cups a day. I drink half & half in mine. Here's the deal I make with myself: My morning coffee I get a sugar cube and half & half to cover the sugar cube. My second cup I get two li'l cuplets of half & half. No sugar. Any other coffee I drink black. I am trying not to drink a lot of caloric liquids cuz I also drink a little orange juice almost every day. You are right, it does add up! And the non-dairy creamer is supposedly bad for you because it has a lot of hydrogenated oils in it. You can have too much of anything. I try to limit my coffee because of both the caffeine and the calories. I have started drinking iced green tea (very little caffeine but it has flavor and no calories and I can drink it better than straight water). Everybody thinks I am nuts cuz it is pea green and smells like grass clippings! LOL But it's s'posed to be good for me. *S*

Wow, 6-8 cups a day...or do you mean oz, LOL! I'd be flying! Here's what I do. I use 1/2 cup milk, be it LF or Non Fat, I add a packet of Splenda and "steam" my milk in the microwave for almost 2 minutes, then I pour the coffee in - voila, it's a latte at a fraction of the cost!! Also, I use instant Espresso as well, I add a teaspoon to the milk and fill the rest of the cup w/water! One cup a day, that's my max - i usually follow that cup w/32 oz. water!

I did not like coffee before surgery, but now drink 2-3 cups of decaf per day. I use splenda to sweeten and a small amount of regular creamer for taste. I estimate that one cup of coffee has approximately 30 calories in it, the way I make it.

I love my decaf coffee (instant Folgers crystals). That is the only brand I will drink. I was a big coffee drinker pre-op (open rny) but I drank the good stuff!!! CAFFEINE!!! Now I can't have that so I do indulge with decaf. I allow myself 3 to 4 cups a day. I use 2% milk and some sugar free hazelnut syrup!! It is wonderful and I do sip it slowly and enjoy every drop. The syrup is Torani brand and a lot of these fancy coffee places use it for their flavored lattes. I get it for myself at a restaurant supply real cheap and make it myself!!!!!

On the nutrition label on the Coffeemate creamer, it states that there are 10 cals per teaspoon, .5 gr. fat, and 1 g. carbs. Thats not a lot. But if you use Tablespoons, and multiply that times 6-8 cups, then that will add up fast. I have a couple of cups every morning of the strong stuff, it keeps me regular and hasn't hindered my weight loss efforts. And now 'they' are saying that any liquids count toward daily fluid intake, including items with caffeine and food items that have a good percentage of fluids like fruit. The report came out about a month ago, was on the world nightly news and in the papers. You no longer have to 'counter' your caffeine by adding more water to you daily intake. I thought that was good news. I still take in the same amount of water that I did before I started the caffeine, and there has been no change. Enjoy your cuppa JOE!!

I use fat free powdered milk as the creamer in my decaf. It adds a little protein. !/3 cup of powder has 8 grams of protein and it really adds up if you drink a lot of coffee.

You might want to look at ProCel & UpCalD, protein & calcium supplements. They're very slightly milky in water, but of course, concentrated with a LITTLE creamer might be just fabulous. Turn your cup of sugar into a cup of protein & calcium, still get the thrill, without the guilt?

Oh My Goodness! I thought my craving for coffee was just me, I have had some weird cravings and too was never a coffee drinker till the surgery and now I am addicted to having 2-3 cups w/fat free french vanilla creamer. I know that I am adding about an extra 125 cals to my coffee by using that stuff, I make the coffee w/equal, but it hasn't hindered my weight loss either and I still drink a ton of water and get my protein. I had open RNY 4/15/02 down 87lbs.

Does protein break down in the warmer water? I thought I read here that it did, but I don't understand why it would...does anyone know? Feel free to email me...

ProCel & UpCal D are a little different than the sports proteins. They can stand water a little hotter than some of the flavored ones. But never boiling. Just "coffee pot hot".
