Question:
Does anyone have any ideas for snacks to curb craving for sweets ??
I need something I can pick up at the grocery store for a quick sweet snack. when checking nutritional value everything has too too many sugars and I am not sure how many sugars we are allowed at a meal or snack. I had an open RNY 7/1/02 and i dont want to eat anything I shouldnt. Thanks for any help!!!! — maspeds45 (posted on September 15, 2002)

hiya,
for me things tasted sweeter post op so i don't really like most of the
protein bars because they taste too sweet but a lot of ppl like them, if
you get a few different varieties and brands you will probably find one
that is good and satisfies your sweet tooth.
i am partial towards unsweetened applesauce and i put a little cinnamon in
it, you can get it in the single serving packs and it doesn't need to be
refrigerated. there is also jello with fruit in it, also in the single
serving sizes.
as far as sugar tolerance goes, you kind of have to try different things
and see if your body can handle it. if you are fixing something at home
that calls for sugar you can substitute splenda (in equal measurement) and
that is better for you post op.
good luck!
*you become really creative with foods and snacks post op! lol

I have only found one or 2 protein bars i can stomach. I make sug. free
pudding with bananas. I also buy some weight watchers cheese cakes and on
occasion a ww.eclair. I also have sugar free cookes. Most of the time its
best to stay away from these things..because its like sugar to us can be
like alcohol to an alcoholic..but now and then we all fall off the wagon. I
do however, keep it very low!!!!

There is no magic # of how many grams of sugar a post-RNY'er can handle or
should eat. For some, even the slightest bit of sugar causes dumping, for
others, like me, I can have 6-10 grams without dumping and for some others
any amount. I do allow myself some sugar, usually the 6 grams in 1/2 of my
favorite chocolate protein bars-Balance Gold..yum! Or I have a few mini
bite size chocolate chip cookies (snack pack size of Chips deluxe) which
have 1.5 grams per cookie of sugar. The key for me is to limit the amount
of sugar grams. I have also developed a liking for some of the SF
products, like Carbolite chocolate bars (these SF bars can be purchased at
Walmart), or Klondike SF ice cream bars. But these SF products are not
calorie or fat free so you do have to watch amounts. Some RNY'ers choose
not to test how much sugar they can tolerate, but my motto is everything in
moderation. No more denial for me...

Well, they actually make a lot of sugar free cookies and candy which you
can buy at any grocery store. It is usually in the diet/diabetic section.
The problem is that they still have a lot of calories and fat. What I
really like for a snack is a sugar free popsicle, which you can get at most
any grocery store in the yellow box. No calories, so no guilt! Nice. =)

I buy a sugar free low carb dark chocolate bar that I have found at CVS.
You have to like dark chocolate to like this though. IT is in the pharmacy
section. I can only eat 2 small squares at a time- becasue it is so rich.
CVS also sells Murray's sugar free cookies. The carbs are higher, but when
you just "have" to have somehting, they area a good choice. my
favorite ones are the Vanilla Wafers. Just do not eat lots of them! Good
luck in your search.
(PS: a better choice for something sweet is always a milk shake made wiht
lowfat milk and additional protein- but I understand that those get old
after awhile)

I find that I like fruit a lot now. I also eat a fair amount of peanut
butter which is pretty sweet. Like the previous poster I like the Murray's
sf vanilla wafers. I put peanut butter on them for a little protein. Also
graham crackers, but watch the sugar in them if your tolerance is low. If
you seem to be having a PROBLEM with craving sugar, try upping your
protein. It really does work!

When I crave sweets... I drink 2-3 SIPS (only SIPS) of diet soda... as flat
as I can get it.

I have to say that my favorite has to be SugarFree Fudgesicles! I hear
some people like to have Cool Whip free though and eat it frozen like
icecream. But there are a lot of sugar free sweet treats out there that
give you that satisfaction without the guilt. I like a piece of sugar free
candy now and then too. There are great butterscotch and butter toffee
hard candies made by Sweet 'n Low. I hope that helps. I know it has for
me.

there are a number of sugar free candies out there.. most of then you can
get at walmart.. some are VERY high in calories and fat.. but I stick to
the hard candy that comes in cinnamon, lemon and butterscotch.. I think
four of then are 25 calories... I try to keep it down to four - six a day.
If you eat too many you'll gas and/or diarrhea... I speak from EXPERIENCE!
Beware though, they do have lots of 'sugar free' stuff there... but its
VERY high in fat and other calories... stick to the hard candies. Good
luck.

I eat sugar free jello puddings. They come in chocolate or vanilla and they
definitely curb my sweet cravings. Hope this helps.
