Question:
ABG (Arteriole Blood Gases)

My main question is, I have quit smoking 2 months ago and my surgery is scheduled for July 25, however my PAT's are sched. for July 16th. Will the length of time somehow delay the date of my surgery. I was also told that Dr. Leverton (BTC - Wylie,Tx) will not go ahead as planned if you do not pass this test. Aside from breathing exercises how do I know if I will pass? I am driving myself nuts over this. Thanks ahead of time :) Trish    — Trish U. (posted on July 1, 2002)

Well, I can tell you that I smoked up until the night before my surgery. I had to have a blood gas the morning of surgery and passed no problem. So if you are doing your breathing exercises and all, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Did they actually tell you that the ABG was to see if you are smoking?? Usually ABG's are drawn to see how well your blood is carrying oxygen, and disposing carbon dioxide. I can't even report COHB unless it is specifcally ordered, and is usully only ordered when we have a burn/fire pt. It might just be done to give the Dr. a baseline of where you start at. Anyway, I've only seen it elaveted in pt's who are still smoking (or in a fire), & I would think that at 2 months out you should be fine. :)

Arterial Blood Gasses or ABG's (from the artery in your wrist) will give the doc readings on your oxygen and CO2 levels as well as your blood's pH. >>> A venous blood draw will get him a nicotine level, so don't tell him you quit if you didn't. He'll know and tell you so. Diane N
