Question:
Has anyone had the JIB surgery from years ago?

I desperately would appreciate talking with peers of JIB (jejuno-ileal or intestinal bypass) which I had in 1977 in Birmingham, Alabama. I have never had the surgery reversed and would like to discuss its side-effects and how folks are living with and treating them, especially bacterial overgrowth in the blocked-off intestine.    — pmscom (posted on February 3, 2002)

Patti.....I had the JIB in 1977, and also have never had it reversed. Shocked my surgeon, to say the least. I have not had any medical problems, but the intestines have compensated to the point that I have regained 110lbs. I am now looking to have a revision. Surgeon wants to hook me back up, and do an RNY.

Hi. My husband had this surgery in 1974, and he reconnected in 1979 due to multiple problems. I will ask him to post here about his experience. Best of luck to you.

Hi. I am posting under my wife's name, since I have not registered on this site yet. I had a JIB operation in Oct. 1974 and reconnected five years later, almost to the day. My reasons were much the same as yours. My intestines would distend as much as 10 inches, causing horriffic pain. It was theorized that this occured due to bacterial overgrowth but no treatment, pharmacological or otherwise, gave me satisfactory releif. Still, I was hesitant to reconnect because I feared putting my weight back on. This seems ironic when you consider that I was already regaining my weight and had reached a portly 275 lbs. Within nine months of reconnection, I weighed 400 lbs. Happily, I tried a program that on the surface appalled me. I joined Overeater Anomymous and within a few years I had lost down to 235. As far as the "bloating" problem goes -- for the first ten years post reconnection, I experienced an approximate 50% reduction in my symtoms and from there on, I experienced a slower but steady decline in my pain. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you'd like to talk further. Good Luck

Patti, my mom had the JIB in about 1970. She had to be reconnected 4 years later due to severe malnutrition, excessive bacterial overgrowth, and some severe complications in the blocked off intestine, which started to become gangrenous. She regained all of her weight after the revision (and scared me away from the concept of WLS for 20 years). Having had the DS surgery, I have never experienced any of the (to my mind) horrific side effects she did. -Kate-

4/7/2002 Hello All - I had this surgery doen in October 1973 in Columbia, SC. I've had relatively little problems through the years but my body learned to compensate and today I have finally regained all the weight I lost. I have my first doctor visit on May 23 for WLS surgery and can hardly wait.

I had jib in 1981. I only lost about fifty pounds. Everything bad that could happen to me did. For ten years i had this weird arthritis from a blind loop infection . The infection would spill over and get in my blood stream and bone marrow. I would break out in red spots. About five hours after the first spot i would be unable to move. Literally. Took ten years to find out what was wrong and all the docs wwanted to reverse me which I fought against. In Feb,2002 I was admitted to the hospital with a severe bowel obstruction.During surgery they found a large abdominal hernia and all my guts were knotted and twisted. Behind the blockage, my bowel was dialaated to 15 cm. Appernetly i had been blocked for years and no one had ever found it, When I asked my pcp why i was vomitting or hurting he said I dont know. Well i was hooked back up andd everthing repaired. Back in the hospital two more times for dehydration aand GI Bleed. I have gained all my weight back in these few months and am trying to get insurance aapprival for r n y. Yes I am one of the LUCKY ones that had jib aand lived to tell about it. Than God He kept his hand on me!

She does suffer diareha all the time, never anything even remotely formed is this dangerous for her??? she is not a computer person so has asked me to ask for her, We both thought she was doing great til i read this, What would be the reasonings for her to need it reversed, is damage going on she doesnt know about????? thanks for the input bbd

We occasionally see a JIB, and treat them exactly as a distal RNY. Probably the most critical thing is to test everything that moves. LOL! If you email me privately, I can send you the list of labs we get, then whatever your doc adds to that. Have you had a full body dexascan (bone density)?

Hi, My name is Charlotte and I had the JIB done in 1975 and it is still intact although I am having complications and my insurance has declined my request to have a revision done. I do have the bacterial overgrowth and I have had it since 1979. It is not a fun thing to have and it hurts like hell at times. The gas and the diarreah are so unbearable at times. I am taking Cephlexin 500 mg, I am taking 2 pills daily and it does seem to help alot. Feel free to mail me anytime. Charlotte
