Question:
Why do alot of the hospitals WILL NOT Schedule this type of surgery?
I have recently found out that all the hospitals except One will not schedule for this type of surgery. I work in a drs office and now I'm worried as to why this is. I'm told that it is because the hospitals feel that this surgery is a high risk and does not want the liability if something goes wrong. WHATS UP.?? — Gwendalyn W. (posted on January 22, 2002)

I know both hospitals where my surgeon works from have restricted him to a
certain number of gastric bypasses a week. I believe it is due to the
expense not the liability. The insurance companies pay just so much for
each surgery.

That sounds really weird to me. I live in MN and there are tons of
hospitals willing to do this surgery. Could it be that the doctors you are
looking at just aren't affiliated with the hospitals you are looking at? I
think you should concentrate on which surgeon you would like to research
and then look at the hospitals after that. There are so many people in
your state KY, that are having this procedure done. I have to believe they
aren't all going to ONE hospital! :)

i agree with the previous posters & also have my own thoughts on this
question. in order to deal with morbidly obese patients there r certain
pieces of special equipment the hospital needs to have. eg; double size
wheel chairs, bariatric beds, extra full size gowns etc. then the operating
rooms need to be equipped with the 'special' tools the surgeon may need to
operate on the patient. all of this costs money, something hospitals hate
to part with.
