Question:
What exactly is GERD and how do they test to see if you have it?
I know that GERD has something to do with acid reflux (I think) but I was wondering what is it exactly? How would I know if I have it? My PCP mentioned testing to see if I have it but didnt tell me how they test for it? Any info would be great. Thanks All!!! — [Anonymous] (posted on December 15, 2001)

Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease is acid reflux. It may be different for
you, but for me, it was like the worst heartburn in the world and would not
go away with normal antacids. I had to double the dose and be very
patient. It felt as though it was burning at the base of my esophagus, and
gave me a horrible taste in the mouth. I would up having to take Prilosec
at first and then Prevacid, which worked a treat, but which is Very, Very
Expensive. I don't know if there are tests for it other than endoscopy.

After a few years of being on propulsid and prilosec (propulsid 4 times a
day and prilosec once a day) I had tests to see how bad my reflux was. I
had an acid test which consisited of an NG tube down your esophagus and
they made you drink some kind of liquid. I also had an endoscopy, of the
esophagus...had a scope of the throat, and also a 24 hour acid test where
wires were inserted in your nose with some kind of gauge on it. Not to
mention an upper GI twice. NOT A FUN PROCESS by any stretch of the
imagination!!!!!! My esophagus would ulcer even with the
meds.........finally I was approved for reflux surgery 3 years ago.....it
has worked up until now. I am on lipitor and baby asprin and have gained
considerable weight so I don't know if it's coming from the drugs I take or
the weight or maybe the nissan came apart.
