What exactly is GERD and how do they test to see if you have it?

I know that GERD has something to do with acid reflux (I think) but I was wondering what is it exactly? How would I know if I have it? My PCP mentioned testing to see if I have it but didnt tell me how they test for it? Any info would be great. Thanks All!!!
