Question:
My PCP won't give me a referral?
I live in Houston and have aske d my PCP for a referral. She told me she has patients that have had this surgery and are heavier now from when they were before. She told she will not give me a referral. Does anyone know a PCP under Aetna HMO that can help me? I am approved through my insurance, but I feel like the rug was pulled out from under me when she told me no. — marie V. (posted on October 26, 2001)

Hi Marie. Your PCP works for YOU! If the one you have now is giving you a
hard time, find a new one. Sorry I don't know any in TX, but keep looking.
You'll find one!

I'd find a new PCP. With HMO's you need the referall from your PCP but you
also get to pick and choose them. Find someone in your area through Peers.
Email them and see if they have surgery friendly doctors. This is why I
choose to list names of surgery friendly and unfriendly doctors on my
webpage. I'd love the name of your regular PCP for my webpage!

I live in Houston and my PCP was GLAD to give me a referral.
I don't know if she takes your insurance. I had a fractured foot several
years back and had a different PCP who would not give me a referral to have
it "fixed" ... I quit that one and went to another one and told
him that if he didn't give me a referral to get my foot fixed I'd keep on
going until I found one ... he gave me the referral. Good luck and DO NOT
GIVE UP!

I recommend changing doctors. I know this seems harsh, however I find it
hard to believe what she is telling you as well as her knowledge level
regarding these new procedures. Good luck Rosemary
