Question:
Is the BD/DS more expensive than the RNY?
I have noticed that a lot more people seem to have the RNY instead of the BD/DS. Is this because the RNY is offered more, or is it because insurance does not approve BD/Ds as much? That leads me to my initial question, Is the BD/DS more expensive? — Terri A. (posted on September 21, 2001)

Yes, it is more expensive because it is more extensive. It can take
longer, which means more time in the operating room, more of the surgeon's
time, etc. As to why RNY is performed more often... I don't know. I don't
know if it has been around longer or it is an easier surgery to perform.
Some insurances consider the DS "experimental."

There are a lot more surgeons performing the Rny than the D/s. I didn't
think it was worth it to have to travel several states over. Also at this
time the rny is considered the *gold standard* in wls. That doesn't mean
there is anything wrong with the d/s or the vbg. Also some insurances
consider it still experimental and won't approve it. You might check
www.duonedalswitch.com ( I think that's the website) for drs and info on
the d/s. good luck,
