Question:
how can i overcome lactose/fat intolerance?
2 months post-op, g.b., usta love milk & m. products but now lactaid milk is about all i can handle, tablets not much help, goats milk neither, haven't been able to find soy cheeses, live in rural tobaccoland so i'm always searching for stuff to broaden my diet. — bob M. (posted on August 31, 1999)

I am extremely diary and sugar intolerant as well . . . I have no intention
of trying to eat around it. Why would you want tobe able to have fat and
fattening dairy products? The object of the GB surgery is to have
intolerances to these kinds of food. With the dairy it is a
sugar(lactose)intolerance. Cheese does not have the same lactose problem as
the liquid dairy products. I am able to eat cheese without consequences .
. . but forget anything with milk as the base like ice cream, sour cream,
yougurt. I am 9 months post op and I can tolerate a little bit more than I
used to, so hang in there, you are still new and learning . . . give it
time.

I have milk goats. Too bad... Goodbye goat milk (sob sob). The fat in
goat's milk goes right through me. I can tolerate a little milk, once every
couple of weeks, but as soon as I start going for something like a 8 ounces
or so... forget it. I don't have that much of a problem with skim milk
though. It seems to just be the fat in the milk that is causing the
problem. I loved my goat milk too. I am looking for a cream seperator
though if you come across any. By the way, skim milk cheese is available
from Borden. I am easily able to tolerate that.

You don't WANT to overcome lactose intolerance! Lactose is SUGAR. Our
doctor recommends we never ever touch the stuff again, or at least until we
want to gain our wt back. If you want to have mashed potatoes and stuff
again, we use "Better than Milk". But we never, ever dirnk milk
or milk subs as a beverage again. There are several milk subs, such as
rice or soy milk, but they're sweet to the taste, ruined my mashed potatoes
as far as I was concerned and a bit high in sugar. Then there's the Mocha
Mix type of products, even store brand non-dairy creamers. I didn't care
for that either, too sweet, even diluted on ceraal. After years of
bumbling, we finally found BTM was our best option.

hi first of..you had the VGB?..lactose intolerance isn't usually something
people who had the VGB have to deal with..anyway.. ..lactose intolerence is
something you just have to learn to live with..and really..it's pretty easy
..I used to love nothing more than having a cold glass of milk with a
brownie..or just about anything..I was a HUGE milk drinker..I never touch
it now..as far as cheese goes...youre having trouble with that?...lactose
is removed from cheese during the processing....maybe you can try it again
later...I found lots of things that didn't work at 2 months post worked
fine at 6..even more at 12...and so on and so on...the milk intolerance
never has gone away (thank God)I lived on cottage cheese during my loosing
phase...and still eat a lot of it..it never has bothered me..have you tried
that?...
