Question:
Is this normal .. changes in eating?
I had surgery (RNY) on July 10th 2002 and everything has been going well. I have only been able to eat about 3 bites and I am so full it almost hurts. However, today I got a bowl of Hearty Tomato Soup (about 8 oz) - I was able to eat 3/4 of it!! That seems like so much to me - could I have stretched my pouch? I normally have soup and can't even get past 1/4 of it before I am full. Could it be that I have done something wrong? Any advise would be helpful! Last time I was weighed was on 9/13 and I was down 65 lbs. Thanks!! Em — AphY Girl (posted on September 26, 2002)

It would be almost impossible to stretch your pouch with soup. It is
liquid and will drain through very quickly. My surgeon discourages us from
eating soup after the first couple of weeks because it doesn't stay in the
pouch long. You will find as you get further post-op that you will be
hungry soon after eating soup.
So, I wouldn't worry about having stretched your pouch. You know, it will
stretch some - it is supposed to. I am ten montsh post-op and can eat
about 3/4 of a cup of cottage cheese at a meal (that's over a 15 minute
period) and my surgeon says that's perfect. I had to have an upper GI
series done, and the radiologist said that my pouch was about 4 ounces and
that was the ideal size.

Hi, I am 6 months post-op and my experience has been that some days I can
eat quiet a bit and then other times I can eat a couple of bites and I am
full. As soon as I think I have stretched out my pouch I have a day or
days that my pouch can only hold the tiniest little bit. Some days the
body just needs a little mosre fuel and you will find you will probably
need to eat a little more on those days. The previous poster is right
about soup not taking up very much room. The denser the protein the less I
am able to eat. You'll be fine.
