Question:
My surgeon bypasses 56 inches of intestine, I am confused..what is this considered,
distal or proximinal? Is this good or bad? I don't dump on anything & have never vomited. My surgery was on May 1st & I am down 87 # I guess my thoughts are that is not very much, but i am confused comparing inches to centimeters. Any one good at explaining? Thanks — Louise A. Well, this takes me way back...I believe there are 2.2cm/inch. So you would
multiply 56 by 2.2. When I did that I got 123.2cm. As far as whether this
is proximal or distal I will have to defer to someone else. There are many
opinions, and I am not sure if there is an exact answer. Some surgeons say
anything under 100 is proximal, while others say anything under 150 is
proximal...So, you are in the middle of both and therefore I have no
answer. Sorry. I believe I had 100cm bypassed and my surgeon considers this
proximal. Shelley

According to my surgeon dumping isnt dependent on length. Your loosing
well, just relax and enjoy it.

From everything I have read, Proximal is 100 cm or less of intestines
bypassed and Distal is 150 - 200 cm of intestines bypassed. However, if
you are 123.2, then you fall between the 100 and the 150 and I could find
no clarification on that "inbetween" amount. When I see the
surgeon this Friday, I will try and get a definative answer from him on
what the "standards" might be. If I find out something I will
post the reply to it in this message/question you asked.
