Question:
Has anyone been on blood thinners and had to stop taking them 30 days before surgery?
I just received my packet from the surgeons office yesterday of all the things I have to do before surgery. Included in it was a list of meds you have to stop at least 30 days before the surgery. On that list was Coumadin, a blood thinner I take because I have a clotting disorder of unknown origin. Now I'm starting to have doubts about having the surgery. I've had clots on several occasions before, no walk in the park. It just makes me wonder if I'm taking a REALLY BIG risk with my life. :-( — Tiffany A. (posted on October 17, 2001)

I have heard of a filter, I think it is called a greenfield filter or
something like that. I think they put it is an artery near your heart and
it traps any blood clots from getting to your heart or lungs. I have heard
that people who have a history of blood clots get this filter placed in
them prior to surgery. Maybe you should check into it? Also, does your
surgeon know you have a history of blood clots? I would ask his/her advice
on this one, but inquire about that filter as well. Good luck

I also have a clotting disorder, but I was told to quit taking my Coumadin
7 days before surgery. The filter is called a Greenfield Filter, and I had
my inserted 2 1/2 weeks before my Lap RNY. I wouldn't have had the surgery
without first getting the filter... blood clots are a huge risk. Good
Luck, and feel free to contact me !! Kim
