Has anyone been on blood thinners and had to stop taking them 30 days before surgery?

I just received my packet from the surgeons office yesterday of all the things I have to do before surgery. Included in it was a list of meds you have to stop at least 30 days before the surgery. On that list was Coumadin, a blood thinner I take because I have a clotting disorder of unknown origin. Now I'm starting to have doubts about having the surgery. I've had clots on several occasions before, no walk in the park. It just makes me wonder if I'm taking a REALLY BIG risk with my life. :-(
