Question:
Aetna finally received the request from my surgeon yesterday..But I
only have proof of one supervised diet attempt from 97..we are still waiting for the one from this January..What are my chances of approval with so little proof of spervised weight loss attempts? I Know I am over their bmi requirements..but will that be enough?? — tylerswife (posted on October 12, 2001)

I was approved with Aetna in less than 24 hours after they received all of
my documents from my surgeons office. My BMI is only 35 and I had only 2
documented weight loss attempts. One was from my OB/GYN. She prescribed
me Phentermine for 1 month after one of my babies were born. The other was
Jenny Craig for only a month or two. THATS IT!!!!!! My only comorbid is
sleep apnea. If you meet the BMI requirements, dont sweat it!! I have
heard that Aetna is one of the best insurance for WLS approvals. Good
Luck!!!

I was approved by Aetna with very minimal supervised diet history. A
couple of months of phen/fen and a couple of months of Xenical. They did
not require "proof" of either. I just included it in my diet
history that the surgeon requested. I'm not sure if he actually turned it
in. Aetna is very good - don't sweat it!

I have Aetna Open PPO also. Although I have not met with my surgeon as of
yet, I have been told my the operators at Aetna that I will have no problem
getting approved due to my comorbs and high BMI. I took the extra step and
'created' my diet history. I have also been in contact with my PCP
regularly over the past three years--each time we discussed my weight and
exercise programs, luckily all was documented in my medical history and it
counts as 'dr supervised weight loss attempts.' Sometimes people overlook
stuff like that--someone here encouraged me to use that kind of information
when trying to obtain approval! Please keep me updated on your situation!
Good Luck! Angels are watching over you!

After Aetna received the information from the surgeon I was denied because
the surgeon did not send the records for the medically supervised diet that
I had been on. After the records were sent to the insurance company I was
approved within two weeks. You should have no trouble getting approved. My
surgery is October 24th.
