Question:
Has anyone ever had pe's or blood clots prior to WLS surgery?
If so, what did the doctors tell you your risk of developing more clots during surgery were? My PCP and hematologist have scared the crap out of me and are trying to discourage me from having the surgery, as my cause for clotting is unknown. But in my first (and only so far) brief meeting with my surgeon he said he would refer me to several specialist to make sure I'm in optimal condidtion before surgery. I'm very confused and frustrated at this point. Help!! — Tiffany A. (posted on October 3, 2001)

I had a blood clot 21 years ago. There was concern I might get another one.
But my surgeon required a venious dopler ( ultrasound) of my upper legs,
There was no longer any damage or blood clots present. I am two months out
and fine

I also have a history of blood clots. My last one was about 3 yrs ago...
but since I have the history, my surgeon put in a greenfield filter about
2-3wks before hand. I'm only 3 days post-op, and i personally wouldn't
have had the surgery w/out the filter. good luck !!

My husband had his lap RNY in February. He had a previous history of blood
clots in his legs and two occurrences of pulmonary emboli. Our surgeon
insisted that he have a Greenfield filter placement before he would
consider him for the WLS. The filter was placed three weeks before the RNY
and he did just fine with both procedures. Good luck!
