Question:
Has anyone post-op used appetite suppressants?

I went to see my surgeon today for a 3 month post-op visit. I initally lost 60 lbs, but nothing in the past 6 weeks. My doc said one possibility is that i am eating too much and should consider appetite suppressants. Has any one else has any success with this? As it is I'm not eating enough protein and my hair is falling out in handfuls. I'm scared to think about what will happen if I cut out even more food.    — arialee (posted on August 15, 2001)

I'm shocked that your doctor would tell you to consider appetite suppressants after a WLS operation. Did he give you a list of items to eat? Give any other suggestions such as eat your protein first, eat protein with every meal/snack and get at least 60 grams of protein per day, if not more? Which WLS operation did you have? Good luck and keep us posted please.

I think that a 60 pond loss is great, for only three months!

My nutritionist suggested taking a fiber supplement like Fibercon before eating because it fills you up. I never tried it though. I will drink a cup of coffee a few minutes before eating though because it supresses my appetite.

I used to take all sorts of appetite suppressants, Dexatrim, Fit America, Metabolife and personally I think that is what got my metabolism all screwed up to begin with. I think they would do you more hamr then good. Try to up your protein intake, that usually works for me if I'm at a plataeu. Good luck.

I do know several long-term post-ops who used appetite suppresants for 3 months to help them maximize weight loss. I'm considering asking my doc to prescribe them for me. I'm having a very hard time losing my final 30lbs. and I think I need the help. But, I (my personal opinon only) think its much to early for you to go that route, especially if you aren't getting enough protein. Wls isn't just about losing weight, you also have to consider your nutritional needs. I also found out early that if I didn't have the proper balance between my carb intake and my protein intake (60 carb grams/at least 60 protein grams) I didn't lose weight. Also, you might just be experiencing a long plateau. That happens and you just have to wait it out.
