Question:
Insurance wont approve unless my husband has medical records from 2 drs documenting

weight loss attempts. I had surgery under the same insurance plan almost 6 months ago and this was not needed for me. My insurance is Aetna HMO. My husband has diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, arithitis, and gout but has never been on any supervised diets. I did put together a diet history stating when drs have told him he needed to loose weight and that was submitted to insurance but they say they want medical records backing that up. The doctors dont have anything in writing in his medical records that state this that I can submit to insurance to get him approved. Can anyone please give me any advice as to how to get Aetna to approve him?    — Tanya P. (posted on August 3, 2001)

I know someone who had the same insurance and did not have medically supervised diets. She got a copy of all her medical records from as far back as she could and the records show a steady increase in weight each time she visited the doctors. Even though she did not have any medically supervised diets she was approved through Aetna HMO.

Ask every doctor your husband has seen to write a letter attesting to that the fact that they advised weight loss and your husband was unable to do this. Also, submit copies of documentation from Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig etc. A friend of mine didn't have documentation from a doctor, but she did have all her booklets, contracts etc. for WW et al. That sufficed to support that she had tried and failed, repeatedly, to lose weight by traditional methods.

I have Aetna HMO also, and was misled to think I needed 2 doctors, however, I only need 2 ATTEMPTS Under a doc. supervision. I have been going to my PCP for 5 years and tried so many different things/drugs. Atena will accept this for me, maybe they will for you. Good Luck!!
