Question:
Has anybody tried 5-HTP a natural form of L-tryptophan?
It is supposed to help curb cravings for carbs and relax a person. It increases the serotonin in the brain. From what I understand, serotonin is the chemical that produces feelings of calmness and satisfaction in us. I tried two capsules and feel asleep! It is the same chemical in warm milk and in turkey that produces sleepiness. As far as cravings, well, I haven't had any today! Any body have any info on this? — Marilyn C. (posted on July 27, 2001)

Marilyn, I don't want to scare you, but please, PLEASE be careful with
tryptophan -- those warm, fuzzies can be highly addictive (emotionally, if
not physically)! I know someone who DID become physically addicted to the
stuff and ultimately ended up with a whopping sleep disorder (on top of her
bulimia)! She had to go cold turkey and she was miserable for 6 weeks. 10
years later, she still doesn't have normal sleep patterns. As with
everything else, moderation is the key. So is talking to your doc about
putting anything "odd" into your system.
