Question:
Has anyone gained weight before surgery?
I am 3 weeks until surgery. I weigh-in weekly at my weight management program. Last night I was up 4 pounds! The past month I had been up & down. I am scared that my doctor will turn me away at the last minute because I have gained weight. I am soooo... scared!! Please help!!!! — florida cracker (posted on June 9, 2005)

I am sure he wont turn you away. Like most of us, I am sure you are, for
once in your life, not watching anything you are eating right now. I know
I'm not. My husband and I are going out for Mexican tomorrow night, Sat and
Sun are my pre-op days and I am on clear liquids only. Monday is my big
day, and all I have put on I will loose. I just enjoyed my couple weeks of
not having to feel guilty for every bite I put into my mouth. Good luck,
and relax.

OMG did I ever gain weight!! I gained 20 lbs from January 9 to April 16
the day I had my surgery. I had so many "last" meals that I
wanted to barf! I think it is normal to gain, I don't know about the
amount, but it is what we do (or did) when we thought we weren't going to
get to eat for any length of time.

For the first time in my adult life I did not watch, obsess, or monitor my
eating AT ALL for about four months before surgery. I lost about 10
pounds. This proved to me once and for all that dieting does not work. I
am now six months out and down 75 pounds (almost to goal) and I have
followed my surgeons rules, and I will never "diet" again. Good
luck and God bless. Yvonne

I'm due to have my surgery next month, a month from tomorrow to be exact.
I have gained over 25 pounds since December 2004. One of my co-worker,
whom has had the surgery also, told me it was due to the lack of sleep.
Well what ever the reason, I can't fit anything that I've wore last summer,
now I wear my dresses as shirts. 25 pounds my not seem like alot, but
whoa! it too much for me now. I'm heavier than I was at full term with my
son. But this too shall pass.

About 5 weeks before my surgery, my doctor told me to lose 20 lbs and put
me on a south beach type diet--I said, doctor, diets don't work, remember?
Well, I tried and lost only 5 lbs. Then the last two weeks before the big
day, he had me eating meat and broccoli or spinach for dinner and replaced
my other meals with protein shakes. All in all, I lost 8 lbs total--hardly
the 20 lbs he wanted! My relationship with my doc is good and he knows I
try to follow his instructions to the T-that's what matters!
