Question:
Does Texas Medicaid cover TT?
I called Texas Medicaid today and told them that I knew they covered hernia repair, but do they cover cpt 15831. He ask what it was and I said a tummy tuck, and it took him a few moments, but came back, and said no they didn't. Its sort of hard for me to believe since that could cause the hernia to come back. Does anyone know for sure if Texas Medicaid covers tt with hernia repair? — Julie S. (posted on February 24, 2005)

I DO KNOW FOR SURE THAT THEY COVER THE HERNIA REPAIR BUT FOR THE TT I
REALLY DONT THANK THEY DO . BU TI WISH THEY WOULD . I MY SELF HAVE BEEN
TRYING TO FIND OU TIF THEY PAY FOR WLS . DO YOU KNOW IF THEY DO? ALL SO YOU
MAY BEABLE TO YOUR PCP TO SAY ITS NECESSARY FOR THE TT BECAUSE OF THE
HERNIA. I KNOW I'M ON MY 5 HERNIA MYSELF AND ITS HARD NOT TO BE ABLE TO DO
ANYTHING . WELL DONT GIVE UP.DANIELLE

I thought that I had read that they do not cover WLS in TX, I may be wrong
and will stand corrected if so. As for the hernia that usually is medically
necessary and a TT is cosmetic, I do not think that the state would pay for
a cosmetic procedure.

Hi. They may pay for removal of excess abdominal skin (this is code
15831)if it is medically necessary. But remember that has nothing to do
with a tummy tuck, which tightens muscles, reconstructs the belly button,
and is done through a low incision. Liposuction can also be done to shape
the result. Simply removing the excess skin does not look attractive and I
as a plastic surgeon do not perform them. Remember too that
Medicare/medicaide reimbursement is at a level below which it costs to
actually provide the services, so the University or teaghing hopsital may
be your best bet.
