Question:
I had an open hernia repair on 4-12-04....
I had an open hernia repair on April 12. The swelling has now gone down and it appears that the hernia is still there. It looks exactly like it did before the repair and is in the same spot. It is still painful, which could be from the surgery, but also hurts like it di before. My question is, could I have developed another hernia or could my surgeon have not repaired the whole thing? He did not use mesh, just stitched the abdominal wall. I have an appointment this afternoon, but would appreciate any input. Thank you. — Doose (posted on April 27, 2004)

I am having an open hernia repair next week with the mesh. From what I
understand from other surgeons the mesh repair is the best way to go so you
do not have a recurrence. Chances of another weakness popping up is
significantly higher with just sewing the wall together. As always check
with your MD it may just be post-op sewlling. Does it "pop" out
when you strain as most hernias do and subside when you lie down? That's a
good way to figure out if it is a hernia. Good luck, I hope it is just
post-op swelling :(
