Question:
Long-term effects of dumping

I wondered about the long-term affects of dumping. If dumping is caused by a rise in blood sugar due to food dumping out too quickly into the bowels, it seems like this might casue the same long-term damage as diabetes. In both cases, you're having really high blood sugar and blood sugar swings (unless I'm interpreting this all wrong). I have been concerned about this because as I am further out, I find I've been widening my food choices and see that I dump from obviously sugar things, but also what seem to be low sugar things (like fats). I try not to repeat these mistakes, of course, but worry what I might be doing to myself in the long-term. Any thoughts would be appreciated.    — w8free (posted on April 2, 2004)

My surgeon says dumping isnt dangerous at all just very unpleasant. Only exceotion would be operating amotor vehicle or some such and dump severly. I thgink its because the blood sugar swing is short term, but its a interesting question for your surgeon. My surgeon says he wants all of his patients to dump. Eventually you will probably dump less our bodies are very adaptable, my surgeons words.

Constant dumping may not cause diabetes but it can cause very serious electrolyte imbalances and therefore should really be avoided on a regular basis. I have seen people on here who have dumped their weight off and they do not realize that you can throw your electrolytes off to the point of serious illness or death.

Thank you all for your posts, thoughts and advice. I've been worrying about this, and am trying to learn how to avoid it. At first I never dumped, but now as my food "repertorie" is expanding, I have a lot of dumping issues. Hugs!
