Question:
What is the difference between Distal and Proximal RNY?

I have been reading MANY of the postings here on the website--alot of them mention Distal and Proximal RNY--so what is the difference between the two of them? Is it the way the surgeon cuts you? I have had 2 c-sections, a gall bladder removal (open), does this make a difference in the way they cut you? Can someone in my position that has had these surgeries have LAP RNY? What is the actual size your stoma should be following surgery, so it doesn't stretch too much?    — Tami W. (posted on October 16, 2003)

It is the amount of intestine they bypass. They tend to do distal on heavier patients to promote more malabsorption and faster weight loss. "Lightweights" usually get proximal. Proximal patients may lose weight at a little slower rate too.
