Question:
What is the best way to get my multivitamin in me system w/o crushing it...

My problem is that when ever I crush it, and try to take it. I throw up, and then feel sick for several hours. Throwing up is never a good thing, and for me it is very dangerous as it lowers my potasium level way too low. And then they stick me in the hospital for IV potasium. Any ideas to get these in me w/o crushing them? Thanks for all the feedback, and best wishes to all of you. K D    — K D S. (posted on July 15, 2003)

I am almost 17 months post op and I still take the Bugs Bunny chewable vitamins. I have a horrible time swallowing vitamins when they are cut into pieces or crushed. My surgeon said it was fine to continue taking the chewable ones and my labwork has been fine. I also had a horrible time with the calcium citrate pills....they are so huge. I would cut them into pieces and it was taking me all day to get them down....so I finally found a liquid calcium citrate and that is much better! good luck to you.

Could you try a liquid multivitamin?

Centrum makes a liquid vitamin, it's like $9,95 for a 12 or 16 oz bottle. Ask the pharmacist if they carry it.

How about Sugar Free Flintstones chewables? They work for me.

At 18 months out, I still take chewable vitamins. I can swallow larger pills now, but I still have a hard time with the vitamins. I went from the Flintstone ones to the Centrum Chewables which are adult chewable vitamins. They are a little tart, but they have all the stuff I need in them. For calcium, I take two of the Viactiv chewables per day. They have several different flavors to choose from. And I take one 1000mcg sublingual vitamin B12 every week. They are cherry flavored and yummy for those who need to take B12.

This is to the previous poster, Kym. Viactiv is calcium carbonate - this is the wrong type of calcium to take if you had an RNY. Calcium carbonate needs stomach acid to be metabolized and we don't have what is needed. You need to be taking calcium citrate. Twinlab makes a chewable calcium citrate wafer that I've been taking for several months now. You can get them at your local Vitamin Shoppe or on the web at http://www.vitaminshoppe.com JR

When I was newly post-op I had this problem- talked to the nutritionist and she said it was okay to throw them in the blender when I have my morning protein drink. Worked for me! I have always had perfect labs and never got sick that way.

I have swallowed my multi vite since about 30 days out. Is there a reason you have not swallowed them? Or are you thinking it will hang up?
