Question:
Are oral anti-fungals dangerous for post-ops?
I know a liver test must be done before you are prescribed Lotrimin, but does the medicine acutally damage your liver? And does having this surgery increase the risks of the medicine to your liver? I am curious because I am tried of looking at my ugly toenails. Any help is appreciated! — Missy W. (posted on May 13, 2003)

I know this doesn't address your meds question, but we've successfully
treated toenail fungus with.... Tea Tree Oil. Mine first, then a couple
years later, his. Oh sure, it takes a year to grow out the ugly nail, but
the TTO stopped the fungus. You can buy it at a health food store. I
transferred it into an eye dropped & put one drop at the root of the
nail morning and night. Voila.

This is in no way medical advice, but here is how I treated my big toenail
that had a fungal infection. I used a file to decrease the surface
thickness of the nail. I got down so far and it was very soft. In fact,
some of it split off. I started putting Lamisil drops on it twice a day.
And yes, the label says not to use it on nails, but I did anyway. (I
figured I didn't have anything to lose!) I started this last October and my
nail has almost completely grown out with no more fungus. I only used the
drops a week or two. Lamisil tablets are very expensive, and I figure I
would rather live with ugly toenails rather than risk liver damage. Tea
Tree Oil might just work, as it is an antiseptic, so it might very well
kill the fungus. It would be worth a try, too.
