Question:
Anyone have a dermoid cyst removed at the same time?

I am going through all of the preop screening and my pelvic ultrasound showed that I have a 7 cm dermoid cyst by my ovary. My Gyn wants to remove it and thinks I should have the surgery sooner than later. I don't want to have surgery twice and I don't want to have this surgery jeapordize getting RNY. Did anyone have any cysts removed during their operation? This one is kind of "far" from the RNY site. Please let me know if you have any thoughts, advice.    — w8free (posted on March 11, 2003)

I would have the RNY and have the cyst removed then. I too had a Dermoid cyst and along with it went my L ovary and tube. Make sure they save it for you, so you can see it, as it's an interesting cyst with hair, teeth and bone.

It wasn't planned, but I had an ovary removed at the same time as my open RNY. When the surgeon had me open, he checked me out and found a fist-sized tumor on my ovary so he dealt with it then. He also ended up removing the gallbladder and repairing a hernia during the same surgery. He said it was a bit hard getting to the ovary from an incision so far away, but he managed. It did add time on to the surgery though. I'm very very glad he managed to do it all at once, that's for sure.
