Question:
Has anyone ate canned corned beef hash post-op?
I'm preparing for surgery (March 14, 2003). I've been pureeing foods for the first 0-2 months post-op. One of the things the dietician suggests eating is canned corned beef hash.Do you have to puree it or eat it the way it is? — Debbie W. (posted on February 19, 2003)

I'm not sure if this is the answer your looking for, but, Corned Beef hash
is LOADED with fat. If I eat it I am sure I would not be feeling to well
after. It does contain protein however, but not enough to benefit. Let me
know if you get any other answers. I'd be interested to know because I do
like it. Good Luck=)

My husband was making this one day. He put some in the Forman grill
thinking that it would take some of the fat out but nothing dripped out, it
just seems to be bound up with it. However, he took it out and patted it
with paper towels and then tranferred it onto more paper towels. I took
about 3 bites of it and it was fine. Not something I would eat on a
regular basis but if you have some kind of craving for it or someone is
making it and you're there, it might be okay. I know that I don't dump on
fat (only sugar) but I try to keep my fat to an absolute minimum (except
for good dietary oils).

When I was first allowed foods I ate it and did just fine. You can only
eat a few bites and your full, so the fat is not really a factor that
early. When you can tolerate foods, go for what you can enjoy and keep
down, the rest comes as you go along. Once my diet allowed more choices I
got a little more picky about carbs and fats. If you enjoy it go for it.

At this stage at your post-op, it seems maybe it might be too early~even to
puree it...I don't know, better really check with your surgeon AND
dietician. It might be okay IF you puree it right now. I'm 5 months, 2
weeks and 2 days out, and I eat corned beef hash with absolutely no
problem. Yummy!
