Question:
How often and how much are you to drink right after surgery?
I am set for surgery on Dec 5th. But my sister had surgery on Nov 5th and I don't think she is drinking enough. She drinks 2 oz. of broth every 1/2 hr. and not really drinking anything else. Maybe a little here and a little there. I thought you were to drink all day. Whether it be water or jello or whatever else. Please help. Thanks in advance! — crazybadbug (posted on November 9, 2002)

Between your "liquid foods" and water, Crystal Light, tea, etc.
you must try to get in 64 oz. total a day. Sip all day! I did and I did
not have to worry about dehydration OR constipation!
Best of luck to you and your sister!
Take care and God bless!

My first day post-op in the hospital I was told I had to drink a 7 oz
"sippy cup" of water each hour or they wouldn't take my IVs out
or let me go home. Once home I was instructed to get in AT LEAST 48-64 oz
of water a day. I drank water as well as protein supplements mixed with
water and sugar free Tang or Crystal Light and was able to get the 48 oz in
every day the first few weeks and built up to 64 oz a day in a month or so.
Your sister will become ill with dehydration if she doesn't drink more.
She also needs the water to process the protein and flush her kidneys- this
aids in the weight loss.

Thank you for your responses. I have read them to my sister and she is now
drinking more water. Thanks a bunch.
