Question:
Is hypothyroidism a hindrance to surgery?
I am a 41 yr old female who has my initial consult for surgery on Nov. 11 - FINALLY !!!!! I saw a website that said hypothyroidism is a contraindication to surgery? Is this true?? I have been hypothyroid for years and recently stopped taking my Synthroid for awhile -- I am now on it and my levels are OK. — Kewpidoll (posted on October 18, 2002)

I am hypothyroid, and take Synthroid daily. I am on a HUGE dose - .30 mg.
It did not hinder my getting the surgery at all. It is very important that
you take your dose daily. I only missed it 2 days while I was in the
hospital, and took it without problems after I got out.

I too take Synthroid, and my doctor actually said that since we are
regulated by medication, it will HELP the weight loss!! I guess that does
make sense!! I also know of a person that was at the hospital ready to have
surgery,(she was coming from out of state) they ran blood work just before,
and her thyroid was out of wack, and they cancelled surgery on her!! Told
her to get it regulated by medicine and see you in a couple of months!! So,
I would have to say that you are good to go!!
