Question:
I'm looking for ideas for protein rich foods to bring in my lunch box to work??

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. I am not fond of shrimp or lobster. I usually have a half hour for lunch and 10 or 15 min. for breaks. It doesn't matter if it has to be refrigerated or not...I just need some new ideas. I'm getting bored with cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt, peanuts, grilled chicken strips... Thanks in advance for your help. Tammy — Tammy B. (posted on August 29, 2002)

Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, Meatloaf (extra lean beef), Low Fat Corned Beef Hash, refried beans, hummus, egg salad, hardboiled eggs, cubes of gouda/edam/other flavorful semi-hard cheeses, beef jerkey, turkey jerky, cream cheese or hummus wrapped in luncheon meats. Just some ideas :).

Wow...reading that is making me hungry. Especially for hummus. Thanks a lot! :-P Seriously though, those were some great suggestions. To the poster: you might also want to try getting those small boxes of cereal (that come in the six- or eight-packs and packing a pint of milk, or even, if you have a fridge at work, just buying a gallon or half gallon of skim milk and keeping it there.

Tammy, I am pre-op (not for long!) and was just thinking of this too (I don't like any kind of seafood). I went to the grocery store and looked around. I found Swanson chicken in a can (kinda like tuna). I will eat it plain but with crackers and maybe alittle cayenne. Deli turkey and roast beef are good too. Peanut butter is always an easy one as well as cashews and almonds. The cubes of cheese is high up on my list too. Yogurt is also a great choice during a break. Mac & cheese has around 8 grams of protein per 1/2 cup. Oh, and sunflower seeds (the low salt ones) are excellent and you can snack on them all day! Hope this helps....

I take Dinty Moore Chicken or Turkey Stew. Cheese snack sticks (Pepper Jack is great!). Chili in one of those little lunch buckets (kind of high in fat though). Chunk salmon or tuna in a can (they make the little snack packages too but their too expensive). They also make the little lunch buckets that are designed for kids....mac and cheese is great. How about a frozen burrito. These things along with a snack fruit or FF pudding cup does the trick! I hope this is helpful.

Turkey Chili is GREAT. The canned chicken is my favorite. Tuna is also a big protein hit. Protein shake would be great for one of your breaks.

I also like Stegner, turtle soup ( no its not made from turtles). It has like 13 grams of protein in a small can. Very easy to digest also.

I take a homemade salad shaker (like MacD's)to work. Start with about a cup of greens (this chews to nothing so it does not take much room in the new tummy); add 2 ounces of cut-up deli smoked turkey, and some cheese shreds. At work I add about 1 TBS. of a low-fat dressing (I adore basalmic vinegar) in a plastic container with a lid, and give it all a few good shakes - Voila! fresh chef's salad to go!!!

Hi Tammy, I am like you, I bring my lunch too and was getting bored with my meals. These other posters have given you (and me) some GREAT suggestions. Here is my 2 cents: I take a drained can of black beans, can of refried beans with green chili's in it, cut up some cream cheese (low fat), a drained can of Rotel, put it all in a baking dish and top it with Montery Jack/Cheddar cheese, bake it at 350* til all is melted. I then scoup some into a (very) small container and take it to work. I use pieces of Pita bread or baked tortilla chips to scoup it up with after you heat it up at work. It has TONS of protein and is not something you have to worry about swallowing and getting stuck and it's good. Hope this helps. Enjoy :)

When I am REALLY bored with my standard choices- I use frozen lunches- and eat the protein portion first, then if I have any room left in my pouch- I eat the veggies and a little of the carb- I like the ones that have a whole protein portion (ie salisbury steak, or chicken) rather than the ones with pasta and pieces of chicken or meat, they just dont seem to have as much protein in them). Of course this only works if you have a microwave...good luck!

Hi Tammy. I make my own 'lunchables' small pieces of lean ham and turkey, sometimes a little peanut butter in a separated container, along with cheese and low fat crackers (I like Triscuit or Wheat Thins). I also enjoy refried beans with a couple of turkey meatballs (you can get these at Trader Joes, they are precooked and wonderfully spiced) with some salsa. Just a couple of thoughts. Some great ideas here! ~Peace
