Question:
Yes or no to taking out GB?

If I have a healthy gallbladder my surgeon will let me make up my mind as to having it removed or not. I know alot of people have to have it removed down the road but I'm worried about taking out a perfectly good organ. Did anyone have a "good" GB out? Would love to hear any and all comments. Thanks a bunch! — Siddy I. (posted on August 26, 2002)

I'd say PLEASE take it out, if I were in your shoes. Here's why.
More than 65% of gall bladders that are "fine" at the time of WLS surgery (RNY) go "bad" and develop stones within two years of the WLS, requiring additional surgery to remove the gall bladder.
After RNY, you don't NEED your gall bladder. All your ball bladder does is store bile, which is manufactured by your liver. When you eat a really big meal, the gall bladder dumps all the bile it has in storage, and your liver continues to make more bile until it gets the signal that there's enough in the stomach. After RNY, you will never eat a huge meal again, and your liver can easily keep up with the demand for bile on an "as-needed" basis.
Needless to say, especially with a history of a gall bladder attack eight years ago, I had my gall bladder removed when I had my RNY. Essentially, I saw my gall bladder as something I was no longer going to need, and I didn't want to take the risk of having to have it removed again later.

I had my surgery and Gallbladder taken out at the same time also. I am and was perfectly healthy. I had the Fobi procedure 8/29/01 and am below goal weight. Dr. Fobi said he takes it out cause 9 times out of 10 people end up needing it out anyway. Anyway good luck to you.

HAVE IT REMOVED!!!!! I begged my surgeon to take it out during WLS. He would not. So 10 months later it had to come out anyway. I made sure he was NOT the one to do it. (Revenge- plus I hated the hospital that did my WLS anyway). If given a choice, get rid of the bleeping gallbladder.

Sidney, I say take it out. I had my surgery on 7/22/02 and haven't had any problems. My surgeon had already decided to take it out but I was prepared to beg if he said he wasn't. I work in the medical field and 2 of the surgeons that I work with both advised me to have it taken out at the same time so my mind was made up. I DID NOT want to have to go through surgery down the road again. I haven't really noticed a difference because the foods we eat are healthy. If I remember correctly the people that have their gallbladder removed can't eat fatty foods. We aren't eating those things anyway so there should not be a problem. Hope this helps you make your own decision. Good Luck!

I think the last poster may be mistaken on the point about not being able to eat "fatty foods" after the gallbladder is out. Since my Open RNY (5-8-01) I've never worried about FAT in foods. (Figured they "pass out in the stool" anyway). And I still eat "fatty foods" all the time since my gallbladder was taken out on March 1st. No difference at all!

Thank you all for your words of wisdom! I have made up my mind that yes I will let my doc take it out while he is already in there. Thanks again to all of you!
