Question:
Did anyone lose their appetite weeks before surgery?

I am scheduled for open rny on 9-26-2002 and I don't know if it's just a bad case of nerves or the oppressive summer heat but I have lost all interest in eating. Very little that I've always loved tastes good to me now. While I don't want to put on alot of weight before surgery I do want to enjoy the foods that I won't be seeing much of post-surg. Is this normal and did anyone else experience this? Thanks. Kelley    — kelleykeith (posted on August 3, 2002)

Man, I thought I was the only one with this "problem"! I am scheduled for open RNY 8/12 and my first words when I got my date were "let the eating begin!!" I only had about 3 weeks. However, nothing sounds good to me! I have actually lost almost 10 pounds in the last month and I am not trying! I only have a week left and I can think of absolutley nothing that I want for a "last supper"! So while it seems strange, you are not alone. :)

This same thing happened to me a few weeks prior to my surgery day. It was the strangest thing but I was almost repulsed by food. I think it was maybe because I had over indulgded way too much in the previous weeks and all of a sudden I was 'sick' of food. Nothing tasted good, and I craved nothing. I have heard others say this at support group meetings. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery and the best of luck to you!

Sounds like you are depreseed and nervous. Ether one will do it. Sure wish I had had that problem Pre Op. Then I could have lost more than the 12 or so pounds I did one month before. ;)

While it may be good to lose your appetite before your weight to help drop a few pounds, the issue of never eating my favorite foods again is not so. I did the same thing as most, pigged out on everything that I thought I would never eat again. However, the only thing that I cannot eat post op is grits. Now when I eat I actually enjoy the taste and texture of the foods that I eat, rather than scarfing my food down before someone tries to steal it from me. So, don't worry about going to all of your favorite places and eating all of your favorite meals, you will get to post op. I promise! 222/119/126

Whoa...did someone just say Pizza? Oh, sorry. That really, really distracted me. Until this very moment I had fogotten about pizza. Man, don't you hate when that happens? :) Okay, back to the point at hand. Absolutely not. I ate like there was no tomorrow. My last meal though...two nights pre-op I was way too nervous to enjoy - altough nothing stopped me fron the giant ica cream sundae that followed the meal. It could be the heat, or it could be a very subconcious thing your brain is doing to you. Maybe trying to condition yourself for your post-op life and not even realizing it? Relax, enjoy. Once you get accustomed to your new life you will realize that it's not so bad gorging yourself all the time. So, in the meanwhile don't worry about your eating habits. Eat whatever, whenever you want and if you don't want it's really not a bad thing. Might save you from packing it on those last few weeks. Congratulations on taking this step and best of luck to you! ~Paula M, RNY 02/14/02 -106.5 lbs.
