Bur what can we eat that don't have Carbs. Am I doing this right? — Lucy B. (posted on June 26, 2002)

A LOW carb diet does not have to mean a NO carb diet. As long as you are
eating protein first and foremost, then veggies/fruit, then carbs if you
have room, you are fine. You are probably right to stay away from the
"white" carbs (rice, pasta, potatoes, white flour, etc.) but
there are LOTS of good carb choices out there: fruits, veggies, and whole
grain products. A slice of 100% whole wheat bread does have carbs BUT it
also has fiber (which you need unless you want to call roto-rooter. Trust
me: you may want to work in some oatmeal made w/milk every couple days LOL)
as does fruit and veggies. The white carbs have been stripped of everything
that makes 'em good for you. Never forget: your body NEEDS carbs and fats
to function. Good luck and happy losing!

A good well balanced diet is better than cutting out all carbs. I know
about craving carbs, but I have noticed that I crave them when I am feeling
down or have not had enough rest. Especially at the end of the day, between
lunch and supper. Try fruit in place of a carb to see if this helps. It has
helped me some. Keep up the good work!

Good for you! It has been a year since my surgery. It has been a year since
I have eaten: pizza, pasta, bread, rice, white flour, sugar and processed
foods. For breakfast, I almost always have scr. egg whites & one slice
cheddar cheese. *I get carbs from fruit & veggies. Good luck! I am now
-169 pounds and at goal :-) *once in awhile, I will have a
"bite" of somebody's pie, etc...once a month about. It is ok by
me. NOTHING tastes as good as thin feels!

I know exactly what you mean about carbs. I am on a protein sparing diet
to lose my 10% before surgery. But I got creative. Eggbeater omlet with
veggies, and a piece of fruit for breakfast, or half a container of yogurt
mixed with cottage cheese, or just yogurt, or just cottage cheese with a
piece of fruit. salad with tuna/ crabmeat/shrimp/or chicken, whatever I am
in the mood for for lunch. And a 3 oz chicken breast and veggies for
dinner. I find no cal/co fat/no carbs sauces to dress up my chicken so it
doesnt seem so plain. I have lost 12 lbs so far. Good luck. Email me if u
have questions. [email protected]

I agree with Cheri, the first poster. You need to have some carbs in your
diet. How boring to be on a no carb diet. There is nothing that says you
have to delete carbs from your post-op diet. Cutting way back is good, but
eliminating is not. Popcorn is a great carb and believe me works as a
great roto rooter!! 1/2 sandwiches on whole grain bread is another good
choice. I, too, stay away from pizza, white bread and white rice. But I
do eat pasta on occasion, whole grain breads, mini chocolate chip cookies
and popcorn.

Lucy, forgot to mention a great breakfast that I have had every am for the
past 4 months-1 scrambled egg with melted cheese and a tablespoon of veggie
chili on top. Yum, and pure protein.

If your are looking for something that does not have carbs for breakfast.
How about boiled eggs/no yolk.

Get "Protein Power" or check it out from the library, or
"The Akins Diet" Both are no carb diet books explaining the whole
ordeal with ketosis, and protein what to eat what not to eat ect. My best
friend for breakfast eats a slice of turkey rolled up with swiss cheese and
mustard for breakfast every morning. Sometimes she changes the meat, and
the cheese, but its always a meat and cheese roll Her doctor says
absolutley no carbs, so no breads rice, ect you get the picture. Good luck
and congrats on trying to maximize your weightloss during the honeymoon
stage. ~Ang~

hello! post surgery i was told by my nutritionist that i needed 100 grams
of carbs a day...i had a really hard time getting that in but for a
balanced diet and healthy nutrition you should get all of the groups -
carbs, protein, fats, sugars...i just make protein the main part of my meal
and have a few bites of rice or potatos with it or maybe 1/2 piece of
crustless bread with an egg...
good luck!
