Question:
Has anyone else suffered from fractures post-op and had slow healing?
I hurt my foot in September and finally rec'd a diagnosis of a fracture and stress fracture in January of this year. It is not 4 1/2 since then, my stress fracture broke and I'm still in a walking cast and wear a bone stimulator at night. All of my labs have been great as well as my bone density test. I am so frustrated because I've spent half of my time post op in a walking boot - unable to do little exercise that doesn't increase the pain in my foot. Please, I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts. (Stationary bike even created increased tenderness so the doc told me to stop.) Thanks for your responses. Krista — Krista L. S. (posted on May 28, 2002)

7 months after my surgery, I fell in our garage will using a wet cleaner
and broke my wrist and tailbone. Normally (I was told by the doctor)the
type of break I had in my wrist would take about 6 weeks in a cast. The
tailbone is something I would just have to live with. However I ended up
having to keep my cast for about 10 weeks. I was very slow to heal. I also
had great labs and I had a bone density test right after the breaks and it
also came back ok. I guess maybe we are slow healers. It will get better.
Good luck.

Where is the fracture in your foot? I had a stress fracture in my foot
right where the toes meet the foot and it never did totally heal. This was
15 year before WLS so I know it had nothing to do with it. I rebroke it
about 7 or 8 years ago and the doctor said that it will never totally heal.
I just have to be really careful of it and wear shoes with good support in
them.

Great news! I just saw my doc, says the feractures are healed - but to
"TAKE IT EASY" for the next several weeks/months. Biuld my
walking to 1 mile/day for 1 month then increase to 2 miles for the next
month if tolerating - and then to three miles/day in 3 months. Of course,
if it hurts, I'm to back off.
Thank you to those who responded to my post.

Boy can I relate...I fell and broke my leg the very day I was discharged
from my Open RNY....talk about a pity party. Luckily, my orthopedist sawed
off the plaster cast the ER put on, and gave me a walking cast that went
into my sneaker. I was able to hobble around a bit - but that's all. My
leg healed in about 10 weeks. I'm sure my nauseau, etc., after my WLS was
due to the fact that I could not move to get the anesthesia out of my body.
I did zero exercise besides walking around the house. Just let your foot
heal, and move a little around the house when you can. Good luck to you!
