Question:
Does everyone need an upper GI and chest x-ray before surgery?

I went today to have my pre-op work done at the hospital and all they did was a blood gas and pulmonary function test. After reading hundreds of posts, I was prepared to have x-rays and an upper GI. Should I be concerned that it wasn't done? What exactly are they for anyway? Has everyone else had it done? My surgery date is next wednesday and I guess I'm starting to freak out a little bit, so any advice to calm me would be greatly appreciated!:)    — Trina W. (posted on April 30, 2002)

No Upper GI for me. I had to have bloodwork, EKG, full cardiac clearance (I had an irregular heartbeat in the past), a pulmonary clearance and a clearance from the allergist because of many allergies. They needed to make sure that I wasn't allergic to latex.

Hi Trina- I didn't have an upper GI or any x-rays prior to my surgery. I just had blood tests done. I wouldn't worry about it- if your doctor thought you should have had one, he/she would have ordered it for you. If you're really concerned about it- you might want to contact your doctor directly. But I don't think all doctors require an upper GI each time. Good luck on your up coming surgery!! You'll do great!

as far as I know it is the norm to have chest xrays and upper GI . I had blood work , upper GI , Breathing test, ecco cardiogram , Gall bladder , ekg ,and a full check up with my family dr . I wish you sooo much luck next week with your surgery .

I didn't have an upper GI but I did have a chest x-ray. It seems odd that they didn't do an EKG or bloodwork to test you for numerous other things.

I guess I should've clarified things a little better, so that ya'll wouldn't think I haven't had ANYTHING done!lol My PCP took care of my bloodwork and I had already had an EKG done prior. Plus, I don't have a gallbaldder anymore, so there was no need for the ultrasound. The only thing I thought I was missing out on was the upper GI and x-rays, but after reading another member's profile who is having surgery tomorrow by the same surgeon, I may be having those done at pre-admittance. What can I say, I'm a natural blonde!:)

I had both done -- and the upper GI showed that I had a teeny hernia (which they'd repair during my RNY) and that I had mild acid reflux (which would probably be relieved a few months post-op). good tests to have!
