Question:
Has anyone suffered from small bowel obstruction...
I have severe pain in the upper right region of my abdomen. Note: I had my gallbladder removed 4 years ago, so it's not a gallbaldder attack. I went to the ER two nights ago and they could not find anything wrong after a 7 hour visit and after an abdominal ultrasound, lab tests, and an abd x-ray. So, I saw a GI Specialist the next day. He thinks that I may have a small bowel obstruction. Has anyone suffered from this problem before? And if so, what were your symptoms and how were you treated for this condition? Thanks in advance for your help. — ellton (posted on February 24, 2002)

Hi. I had a small bowel obstruction in mid Sept. I was just over 2 moths
out from a rny bypass. It started with my being quesy. Then I felt liek
food just sat in my stomach, and then the vomiting began. I vomited for
several hours, even after they gave me reglan and zofran. They ran all
kinds of tests on me, and finally put an ng tube in (that is an awful
experience). The tube began draining a lot of trapped liquid that had
backed up into my "old" stomach. It gave me some relief right
away. I had surgery two days later and they found an obstruction from
scarring and a hernia. I was in the hospital for 8 days total, and am doing
fine now.
