Question:
I'm 5 weeks post op and over ther past week I've noticed my teeth never feel clean...

I know it sounds weird, but my teeth always feel like there is sugar on them. I can brush and floss my teeth like crazy and twenty minutes later my teeth feel like they're coated in sugar. Has anyone had this? Why is this happening? And, is there sometimes you can do to fix it?    — Pamela P. (posted on January 25, 2002)

If the feeling on your teeth is coming from ketosis, a likely possibilty, no amount of brushing, flossing, mints or mouthwash is going to help. The ketosis is being produced by your body and those don't help much with the body produced breath or odor. I do understand that it gets better over time. Try to remind yourself that, if you do have ketosis, your body is burning fat big time.

While I think ketosis may be a part of the problem, I also think that it is the liquidy/soft foods that contribute. When we chew hard or crunchy food, this is a natural tooth cleanser. It helps to get that coating off of our teeth. If we are just eating soft foods or liquids, we don't have that added benefit. I noticed once I was able to eat and chew more crunchy and hard foods that the problem was much improved. Shelley

Hey, Pam! I, too had that same feeling. I had no idea what it was and didn't even think to ask anyone else. Glad you did :) I don't have that problem now, so know that it will go away. Glad to see you online.

I a li'l over 6 weeks out and I have that same slimy, gritty feeling too. I brush a few times a day and what I also do to try and remove the feeling is scrape my tongue. Not only do I brush it really well, but I scrape it with a spoon. You can go out and buy a tongue scraper, but why go out and spend money when you can use a regular silver spoon. Just a helpful hint.

Yes, Yes, Yes.......... I have noticed this, and I work for a dentist! It's an awful feeling as is the taste that is always present. I haven't yet figured out what to do, but I think I agree that it is because I am not eating anything crunchy. The taste is also connected to the healing process inside, or so I was told at my lat support group. It doesn't taste like the ketosis from Atkins..it's different.

Same here. Here's my new post op routine: I swish with hydrogen peroxide (a dentist told me to do this 25 years ago). Then I brush with Arm & Hammer baking soda. THEN I brush with a whitening toothpaste. I feel like my mouth is clean after this routine. I guess I should floss too.

I use a sonic toothbrush. I switched about 4 months ago. My teeth have never felt so clean. I highly recommend one. Target sells them for around $30.

I get a feeling similar if I have a low liguid intake, make sure you are getting your 64 oz of water a day. When dehydrated our saliva thickens and will coat your teeth and tounge, making everything feel dirty.
